Cycling is more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport. Why is it not popular in many places? And how to increase its popularity?

It is true that cycling have more positive impacts on the environment than other means of transport, but it is not popular to a lot of people. There are many reasons for this, but this situation could be addressed in some practical ways.

There are two main reasons why citizens are not interested in riding a bike to go to their destinations. First, using other forms of transport instead of bicycle may save them a great deal of time. Nowadays, a lot of people have to cope with the busy and stressful lives and hectic schedules, so the option to go by faster vehicles thus car and motorbike is much better for them to reduce the travel time. Moreover, the negative impacts from extreme weather on human health is another major point why many people are put off cycling. For example, residents have a tendency to journey by car or train to avoid biting rains. Even though it is sunny, they are still very keen on taking a trip by private cars to protect themselves from dust and ultraviolet rays.

Some measures should be taken to overcome the reluctance of the public to use bikes. Anyone can build up their fitness, beginning with using a bike for short journeys to school, to work or to the shops. Campaigns in the media, in school and workplaces could promote the health benefits of cycling, and offices and factories should provide changing facilities and hot showers for employees arriving cold or wet bike. Authorities must discourage motorists from using their cars by introducing congestion charges, as in London, reducing traffic on the roads and encouraging more people to use bikes. If more city cycle lanes are also constructed, these will keep cyclists safe and speed up journey times.

In conclusion, there are some known reasons for this trend. However, with a little public and private initiative, the popularity of cycling should be possible to increase.
