For decades, critics have been predicting the death of classical music, suggesting that the classical music audience has grown old with no younger generation to take its place. They point out that orchestras are debt-burdened, that major record labels are cutting-back or cutting-outtheir classical operations, and that the number of radio stations with classical programming is decreasing. The critics conclude that classical music is no longer popular. What these critics seem entirely ignorant of, however, is that the worldly and educated, so-called ‘Generation-Y’ is more apt to take an interest in classical music, and as more and more classical organizations take the initiative to capitalize on this, the future is beginning to look promising.
