Cut off

Hello everyone,

I watched an American movie yesterday. In the movie, the father told his son to obey him. At that time the son wanted to go to that place where his father didn't want his son to go. When the son opened the door to go out, his father said:

- If you go out, you're cut off.

Could you please tell me what "cut off" means?

Regards,

JA

Joseph A what "cut off" means In this context I would say that it means that his father won't support him financially anymore; however, in more extreme circumstances it means that the son must leave home and won't be permitted to live there anymore. CJ

Broadly speaking, it means 'You are no longer part of this family'.

But much depends on the context.
