How do you write this correctly?
I cut my nails square not round so as not to get an ingrown nail.

This works. You could say, "square rather than curved." "Round" isn't exactly what you mean.

In your version, you'd need to set of "not round" either with parentheses or commas.
(Reminds me of James Bond's "shaken not stirred." I don't know if he uses commas.)
