cut it out

I recieved some coupon ads. A line read, "Cut It Out."

It reminded me that 'cut it out' has another quite different meaning ----> stop doing sth.

Why 'cut it out' means stop doing sth.? I don't get it. Does anyone know its origins?

Thanks,

Here's my 2 cents:

out - has a sense of stopping, terminating, such as out in 'turn the light out', ''turn off the light', put out the fires'.

'Out' is similar to 'off'. For instance, turn the light out = turn off the light

'Cut the coupon out' means to cut the coupon off its book.

Thanks for the reply, Clive
