Custodian BrE & AmE

How is the word custodian commonly used in the US and the UK?

In an ESL book here, I see an illustration of a man (holding a mop) labeled custodian. This tells me that a custodian is the same as a janitor.

In our school we call the person in charge of the care of the school's properties the property custodian

The dictionary defines the word either as a janitor or a caretaker of the land of an absentee landlord.

How do the native speakers normally use the term?

My first thought is the "janitor" meaning.

The other meaning, for me, is "caretaker."

In AmE you use the term custodian as often as the term janitor to refer to that person who cleans the building premises?

Probably more often than janitor.
