"curve" a class' test scores

I'm not sure what the word is, but it sounds like "curve", meaning to raise the score by a % value for everyone in the class (I'm guessing). Is the word "curve"? if so, why? Why does it apply?

As far as I can tell, it apparently means 'to draw a curve displaying the test scores'. I don't know if this usage is idiomatic or not.
