Curry-bashing backfires

Title :

Curry-bashing backfires on Oz

A popular destination for higher education for years that has attracted a huge number of Indian students has turned a not-so-safe haven now. With fresh attacks on Indians reported in Brisbane, curry-blashing Down Under has taken a serious turn. The Indians are not feeling secure there and it needs immediate intervention of the government. Skeptical about any improvement in the scenario in the near future, prospective students and their parents too are turning their back on the Kangaroo land.

Could you please explain to me what "curry-bashing" and "backfires" means in this context?

"curry-bashing" is not a term I'm familiar with, but it must refer to racially motivated attacks against Indians. ) "backfires on" means that the Australians' "curry-bashing" activities are having unexpected negative consequences for the country. The article goes on to say that Australian universities are "alarmed at the dwindling Indian registrations"; these are presumably the negative consequences referred to.
