'cupboard', 'closet' or 'wardrobe'

When to use these designations? Can we use them interchangeably? Are they used differently in AE than in BE?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I think they are used differently in US and BE. So for the BE version Closet is not used. Cupboard is a built in storage area with a door - for example kitchen cupboards hold all your cooking stuff and food, office cupboards hold envelopes and things, kids have toy cupboards and so on.
