Which should be used here?

So, Barth proves that the key factor to defining and perceiving ethnic group is precisely this specific and 'imaginary' boundary, as opposed to previously determined cultural contents of a certain ethinc group.

It's a sociologiacl term, so I'm not sure if it is appropriate to use 'make-up'. I was just wondering what's the difference in the usage of 'content' and 'contents'.
