cryptic epitaph

0 I think that it's a little cryptict this epitaph from Robert John Creswell's grave, isn't?:02br

I have tried my best to figure out the meaning behind this epitaph for years, since I read "Travels with Charley." It's hard since a few words in there don't have definitions you can find. But I did my best interpretation, and here it is:

One who hopes and strives toward heaven and should reach it so suddenly will find his hopes dashed, despite his desire to deny the worthyness of the pes
