Cryings

"All my cryings
Feel I'm dying, dying
Take me back to my own home"
the song: Reflections of my life

Is 'crying' countable? (crying used as a noun)

The dictionary says crying is uncountable.
e.g. She could hear crying coming from the next room.

Why not use "all my crying" instead?

Thanks

Indeed, you could use the singular. Why plural? The short answer is: Poetic license.

  • Why plural?
  • The short answer is: Poetic license.
  • Actually plural make it more emphatic and dramatic - as if reflecting on many bouts of crying over one's lifetime.
  • They are separate incidents of crying, not one big cry..
