Are these expressions commonly used, or formal?

Thank you.

The sentences seem old-fashioned to me. I doubt you'll find them in contemporary literature or speech. There are lots of different expressions you can use: 1) Mary squealed with surprise.

Matthew's alternatives are more colloquial, but I find nothing dated about the originals.

a cry of anguish
a cry of love
a cry of victory
a cry of distress

Phrases like these still commonly occur with verbs like 'utter', 'give', 'let out', 'stifle'.
