Crunching, on the up

Kallis to Raina, FOUR!!, that is a crunching cover drive on the up, it looked like a gentle push but the ball kept going, the man in the deep had no chance, terrific timing!

Could you please explain to me the emboldened part?

Though I know "cover drive" is a type of hitting a ball from a bat.

"crunching" = very powerful I think "on the up" means that the ball is on a rising trajectory, but it could also mean that the ball was relatively high off the ground when he hit it.
