Crown of thorns?

It's still true that sheltering under bushes is safer than cowering by oak trees during a storm-though prickly thorns might not immediately suggest the sacred and 'protective. crown of thorns, as once they did.

Does as once they did mean = thorns once suggested the sacred and protective crown of thorns?
I think the crown of thorns refers to the one that Jesus wore, but it can never be protective. I am wondering why the word 'protectve' is used here.

Thanks in advance!

I suppose because Jesus and/or his death while wearing that crown protect Christians from the certainty of eternal damnation. Or something like that. I am not a theologian.
