Cross fingers (chess)

Hi.
What's the difference between crossing one's fingers' and being hopeful?

What exactly is chess strategy? Is it setting a trap, crossing our fingers, and hoping the opponent falls into it?
Thanks in advance

Crossing one's fingers is the British way of expressing a wish/hope for good fortune. You may not necessarily be optimistic/hopeful.
