Question

This is very hard! I don't understand.. here's my assigment:

Purpose: The purpose of this unit is to explore differing perspectives of an important issue and develop a persuasive argument of your own by analyzing and evaluating this issue from at least two sides. In addition, you will later develop a plan of action based on what you now know about your issue. Your final paper will be 5-8 pages, word processed, and may be broken down as follows:
First: Decide on an issue that involves an event of significance, one that caused policy changes. This might come from the Triangle Shirtwaist story, issues around Hurricane Katrina, or the Miranda rights story. *Ask your instructor for a list of ideas.
Section I – You will create and state a question to address, and then describe the issue. You will write a rationale (reasons) as to why you chose this issue, including why you believe this issue is important enough to explore, write about, and present. Write these in your journal and give a copy to your instructor – you will need have our issue approved before going forward. PLEASE do this early in WEEK 9.
Section II – You will research using the MCC Library and databases, and write about the issue from at least two perspectives. Write about each perspective clearly. For each perspective, identify key points present supporting evidence, and your own analysis of the issue for each side.

I chose this topic " The Triangle Shirtwast Factory Fire" please explain what to do.
It was due Yesterday. I am falling back behind.. I haven't even started.

Write about two different thoughts related to the fire in the factory.
eg Did it make other factories take steps to be more safe?
eg Why did the employees work in such an unsafe place?

Write about each perspective clearly. For each perspective, identify key points present supporting evidence, and your own analysis of the issue for each side.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

It was a warm day on Saturday in New York City, March 25, 1911. The workers got paid and were preparing to go home. Just then somebody on the eight floor screamed, “Fire!” William Bernstein tried to stop the fire instead of going crazy and scream that there’s a fire, to escape. He failed to stop the fire, so it grew bigger. Also, some workers tried to stop the fire. As it grew bigger, the workers were screaming, getting burned alive, jumping from the window, and hurting themselves. The people outside the factory saw the whole thing, like women getting burned alive, and jumped from the window. Where was the fire alarm at the time?

The fire started small on the eight floor and somebody spotted it, but instead of asking for help and to tell all the workers to get out as fast as possible, they decided to try and stop the fire, but then it grew up so fast that the fire spread very quickly across the room. A few women was just about to leave the factory. While leaving the room, one of the women smelled the smoke.“She looked back at the cutting tables and spied flames darting through the openings beneath the tables.” (Warnes)

And then women screamed “Fire!” and cried out loud in a horrified voice. They went like wildcats trying to escape the awful fire. Some workers tried to stop the fire with buckets of water, but the fire had enough fuel to grow due to the material scraps and patterns. Some workers kept playing with the fire using an old rusty hose that didn’t even work. The fire got worse because the worker’s table were getting burned. Eventually, they decided to make their primary goal to escape instead of stopping the fire, but many of them failed to escape because it grew so quickly and the smoke itself killed some workers.

The workers on the ninth floor were not informed about the fire on the eight floors. Eventually, they saw smoke from the eight floor. About 250 workers went into panic mode and started screaming, pushing, wrestling, and crying while trying to exit. They could only go one at a time.

About 70 people on the tenth floor managed to escape, except for one. Some of them barely made it, thus, many had their “clothes and hair burned” (Warnes) while climbing up through the “Twisted Fire Escape” (Brothers)

Those who didn’t escape were either burned alive or jumped from the window hitting the solid pavement. “Pavement was broken by falling bodies.” (Brown Brothers). A lot of people were outside of the building watching the tragedy scene. They were in fear. Other workers were running around trying to escape from the fire. Finally, they found the fire escape, “stairs were narrow, dangerous, and very close to the burning building, but the people tried to use them anyway” (Warnes)

Worker’s relatives were not from the USA because almost all the workers were immigrants, usually from France. They did have friends.

I don't know if this is what your teacher wants, becayse I don't know what level you are studying at..

The instructions you showed us made it sound like your teacher wanted more analysis.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was an event that held relevance in American history. On March, 25, 1911 at approximately 4:40 PM a fire broke out in the company’s factory in New York City which was the deadliest industrial disaster. 147 workers died in that incident, they either died from the fire or jumped from the window. It was considered the most tragic fire incident in New York City. “The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies’ Garment workers’ Union, which fought for better and safer working conditions for sweatshop workers in that industry” (Wikipedia)

The fire occurred due to the poor and unsafe working condition in the factory. The Shirtwaist Factory was located on the Asch Building in Manhattan. The working area was crowded with young workers. There were about 500 workers on the top three floors. On the ninth floor, there were approximately 288 machines and 308 employers. The machines took up a lot of space in the room, so they were all close to each other. The investigation reported that the greatest number of death occurred on the ninth floor. Also, the area was unclean due to the fact that it is a garment factory which there was pieces of cloth scattered on the floor. According to the fire marshal, this mess caused the fire to grow very quickly that they some workers had no time to escape. Also, the doors were locked to prevent the workers from stealing and leaving early.

In my opinion, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory lacked of safety and cleaning environment. This was hundreds years ago, that’s why it lacked of firefighting equipment because back in the day, things were different. Thus, all factories lacked of safety conditions. However, the fire marshal concluded that cigarettes caused the fire. They could be wrong. This incident happened on a pay day where they were about to leave. What if someone deliberately set the fire to the factory? The pay rates were very low and they worked very long which I think they hated it.

The owners, Blanck and Harris were not found guilty. “I believed that the door was locked at the time of the fire. But we couldn't find them guilty unless we believed they knew the door was locked.” (Christianson) I would have to say that the verdict on this particular case was a poor one, because the managers and owners were careless. USA lost 146 lives, because the managers and owners were lazy, a factory was burned down. Thus, the owners were only concerned about their well-being; USA suffered one of the worst factory fires of all time. Actually, it was the worst. In my opinion, the owners should have been guilty as charged, and should have been sentenced to jail for a very long time, and perhaps death sentence.

By looking at the list of victims, why would they hire teenager girls to work at an unsafe factory? Here is some list of victims who were identified: “Bellota, Vincenza, 16, asphyxiation/burns, Brodsky, Ida, 16 (Identified by her cousin), Maltese, Rosia, 14, asphyxiation/burns. Identified by her father (P. 275-276) it is wrong to hire girls at age of 14-16 to work long hours.

`The fire could have been prevented with the knowledge and procedures we use today. Like a fire alarm in the factory or firefighting equipment to stop the fire. Also, enough exit doors because having one exit door is not good because people will be pushing, etc. to get out. They should have made the room bigger so that it won’t be crowded with workers. It is hard to keep an eye on workers if it is crowded, so a bigger room with fewer workers would have been better.

Because of this incident, the safety standards have changed significantly such as better firefighting equipment, fire alarm, and helicopter. Now there are more exit doors which can only be used as an emergency and if you intend to go through that door, the fire alarm will turn on. All factories are safe, thus, now there’s a trainer to teach new hired on how to be safe, etc. All factories are very strict, so there are usually 2-3 supervisors watching the workers. The owners of the company are responsible for the workers, especially a physical job.
