Crimea or THE Crimea

Hello!

Could you help me, please?

The rule says that we should use the definite article in front of peninsula names. Crimea is a peninsula but in the texts I meet both variants: rarely with "the" and mostly without "the". So which is right, and if whithout "the" - why?

I went to Crimea on holiday.

or

I went to the Crimea on holiday.

Thank you!
