There is also this broader definition:

a : the moon at any stage between new moon and first quarter and between last quarter and the succeeding new moon when less than half of the illuminated hemisphere is visible b : the figure of the moon at such a stage defined by a convex and a concave edge

The root is from Latin crescere, to increase or grow. Doesn't it only say about growing bigger, meaning first quarter?

Thanks.

Well, I guess if you wanted to think Latin, you could say it's growing toward the full moon, and it's growing toward the new moon

It's surprising how often you see pubs called 'The Half Moon', with crescents for their signs.

Half moons are first and last quarter moons, and since they are half, they are not crescent.

Thanks.
