Credibility

Hi, ..


Can you please, teachers, take a look at the following sentences and tell me whether each is acceptable?

- Don't assign too much credibility to him, he is not exactly the type to be trusted.

- Don't assign too much credibility on him, he is not exactly the type to be trusted.

- Don't assign him too much credibility, he is not exactly the type to be trusted.

Those are all comma splice errors. "assign ... on him" is not right.

"assign ... on him" is not right.

If the comma splice is fixed then the other two are possible, though it may be debatable whether "assign" is the best choice of verb. Say

eg Don't assign too much credibility to him. He is not exactly the type to be trusted.

or

eg Don't assign too much credibility to him, because he is not exactly the type to be trusted.

Using a comma doesn't have the effect you want. It just makes your writing seem a little sub-standard. If you want the second sentence to sound like a revelation or conclusion, how about this?

Don't assign too much credibility to him. He is not exactly the type to be trusted!
