Vocabulary

create or invent

How men first learnt to ___ words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. (create/invent)

I think in this case these two words have the same meaning and therefore both can be used.
However, the answer is invent.
So please explain to me why invent is the more suitable word here.

Thank you very much.

RayHI don't like either choice. A better way to phrase it and use invent would be "How men first invented words is unknown.

Thank you.
I agree with you. It seems unnatural when we say "men learned to invent (or create) words."
It would be better when we say "men invented words" or maybe "men learned to use words."

Far be it from me to suggest a course of action in a situation like this.

On further reflection I have to say that this question doesn't make any sense at all. We don't speak of people learning to either create or invent. We think of people as inventing or creating b

that key is wrong, both choices are obviously the same for this question. whoever made this test didn't think clearly at all. Do they really care about the students who may have to pay the price of wasting 2 years going to school for some silly mistakes caused by the test makers!

Invent is more suitable, because it is a test! Otherwise, they wouldn't ask. During a test you can usually assume this. These test get reviewed by many experts before publication. They want to know if you can guess the difference.

the word "first" was the clue.
