Crack up

Whar's the meaning of "cracking up" in this sentence? Perhaps it refers to what happens to insects and the noise that they make when they are stepped on?

Thank you in advance for your help!

This book tells of the absurdity of existence, connected to ruthless capitalism, with protagonists who try to preserve their dignity while floundering like bugs and sometimes literally ‘cracking up’.
