Vocabulary

crack drug squad

Hello

I was wondering what the precise meaning could be of "crack drug squad" in the following context.

Murphy and Carter take the audience on a journey from the backstreets of London's homeless world and the seedy deals of a crack drug squad to the disappearance of two convent nuns and a vigilante group wreaking revenge on criminals. (source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2004/04_april/28/murphys_law.shtml)

I know that crack is a kind of drug, but 'crack down' is often used in the context of police breaking up criminal organizations. What does the 'crack' in "crack drug squad" refer to?

Thanks in advance

It seem to me that 'crack' can have either of two meanings there: 1 - ( n) pellet-size pieces of highly purified cocaine 2 - ( adj) first-rate; excellent

Thank you very much. I hadn't thought of meaning no. 2. This is very helpful.
