Cowardly Or Coward

Hello everyone,

Could you please tell me if either "cowardly" or "coward" is okay in the following sentences?

1. Before he heard Jim's explanation, the doctor felt that the boy had been very cowardly to leave Smollett.

2. Before he heard Jim's explanation, the doctor felt that the boy had been very coward to leave Smollett.
