covering letter

It seems 'covering letter' is BrE and it is 'cover letter' in AmE.
Is it correct? How about in Canada, Australia, etc.?

Hi, In Canada, we say a 'cover letter' when it relates to an enclosed resume. In a business context that does not relate to a job application, eg a letter that is sent to describe various enclosures/attachments, I'd use the phrase 'covering letter'. Best wishes, Clive

In Canada, we say a 'cover letter' when it relates to an enclosed resume.

In a business context that does not relate to a job application, eg a letter that is sent to describe various enclosures/attachments, I'd use the phrase 'covering letter'.

1. cover letter = application letter that accompanies the resume [personal history]
2. covering letter = letter attached to an order sheet, invoice, etc.
Right?
Do you use 'transmittal letter' for those also?

Hi,

Yes.

Google gives these hits:

transmittal letter - 650,000

covering letter - 1,750,000

So, both are used, but clearly the latter is more favoured. That's been my experience, too.
