Covered vs Sheltered

Can someone fix these sentences for me.

1 I was downstairs outside my lobby under a brick covering that covereed me/sheltered me from the rain.
2 The plants on our balcony don't get went when it rains as the balcony is covered/sheltered by the balcony/edge up above.

By brick covering I mean an EDGE maybe that sticks out from above a store window that you stand under if it rains.

Thanks
