Covered in blood or covered with blood?

Covered in blood or covered with blood?

I have problems to understand the difference, when something is covered in or something is covered with.

Where exactly is the difference between covered in blood and covered with blood?

Thank you in advance!

I believe this could be a matter of regional variation. I don't think any difference is intended. I tend to use "in" in these cases, but I hear "with" as well.
