cover letter: things to include?

I'm at the start of writing my cover letter for a research assistant position in biomedical research field. I do not have much of experience to emphasize. My current status is that I have applied for a graduate program specific to that field. I'm just waiting to hear from them. Can I talk about this to show the job interviewer of my interest in a way that currently I might not be a strong at specific task of the job (like using statistical program) but as I go, my studies will develop the skills necessary, or should I not include since it hasn't happened yet? I appreciate your comments!

Hi, Sure, you can talk about that if you want to. View your cover letter as a way to quickly make the reader think you might be a good candidate for the job. Make the best case you can.
