I need to send my cover letter for a phd position and I would like your opinion. Please and thank you!!
Dear XXX,
I am applying to the Phd position you are offering for the following reasons. Firstly, the department is Organisational Behaviour and I would like to do research that can be applied. Science has a social responsibility and the applicability of its results is an important motivator for me. Secondly, the phd program in economics offered by lausanne university has a solid theoretical ground which is very important to construct models than can be applied later on.
I have a very particular background from which the department could gain a lot. I did my master in Neuroeconomics at XXX in The Netherlands. This master has allowed me to open up my mind and understand other disciplines - neuroscience and psychology. This has enabled me to think out of the box and find creative solutions for economic dilemmas. Furthermore, I have a strong statistics base acquired during my bachelor where I was on the top 5% in the area of Econometrics. This combination of mathematics and psychology is rarely found and it is what makes me different from other applicants.
Moreover, I am currently finishing my master thesis at the XXX in Berlin under the supervision of XXX. In the coming weeks I will be running an experiment to test the role of trust in charitable giving. The novelty of my experiment is ... . During these last months I had the opportunity of independently coming up with my own ideas and designing an experiment from scratch.
Beside the hard skills acquired in the academic area, I would like to stress the fact that I am a very proactive person who looks for new experiences. During my studies, I tried working as an intern in different areas. Among the most important more me were two. Firstly, my time as a teacher assistant at Maastricht University. Secondly, when I worked as a trainee at the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. Furthermore, I have lived in more than five different countries where I had no family or friends. It has made me become a resolutive and social person as I had to solve problems and start my life from zero every time, respectively.
I am positive about exceeding all your expectations, may it be academic excellence, motivation for research or interpersonal skills. Furthermore, my international and interdisciplinary background will definitely add more diversity to your program.
