Cover letter help!

This is my first time writing a cover letter. I'm applying for an internship program for a science research. Can someone help me editing it and tell me where to improve? Your help will be so much appreciated. Thanks a lot!!

I would like to express my interest in participating at **** project that I learned through the **** program. My name is ******* and I am currently a third-year student majoring in Biochemistry at *******. I am seeking an internship to acquire more knowledge on virology and further hands-on experience in a laboratory setting at **(a country)**. I had a little bit of exposure to virology, specifically Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and working with mice during my last internship in ****(a country)*** therefore I believe that this internship will enable me to further extend my learning experience and interest.

I have had a number of laboratory experiences in the past two years in support to my education background that would make a strong asset to the project. I am trained in performing standard Molecular and Cellular Biology protocols as well as Microbiology laboratory techniques. I am also serving in leadership positions for several organizations on campus so I am able to work both independently and cooperatively with the people around me. Having the background skills necessary to do this project, I am confident that I will make an active, enthusiastic and useful member for your research group.
