I, Chetan S., a third year undergraduate student, pursuing my Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.), Electrical and Electronics from Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, India, am seeking for a summer internship of 2 months - June and July of 2012, in accordance with my academic background and qualifications. I wish to apply for the same at your institute, under your guidance.

I have a keen research interest in the field of embedded design and hence would like to intern under your guidance. I am currently working on an ‘FPGA based Hardware Accelerator for Image Scaling’. This project involves the selection of an algorithm for image scaling and its hardware implementation using FPGA architecture. I will be completing the courses ‘Digital electronics and Computer organization’ and ‘Digital Signal Processing’ next month and therefore, I have a strong understanding of the concepts of FPGA architecture and signal processing. Having worked with Xilinx FPGAs and being familiar with Verilog HDL, I believe I can be a valuable addition to your project.

I have had prior experience of working in a research environment having successfully completed an internship in Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, CSIR-India this summer. I was part of a two member team which designed and implemented an ‘AT89C51 microcontroller based Single Axis Solar Tracker’. Tackling the numerous difficulties which arose during the implementation of the tracking system has helped me learn to manage my time, work in group situations under strict deadlines, and to recognize the importance of a strong work ethic, persistence, and intellectual integrity.

For our technical fest last semester, I secured the 3^rd place in the design category for a prototype of an ‘Electromagnetic Surveillance Weapon’, an automated coil gun which fired a 20g projectile at the target at a velocity of 20 m/s. My complete resume is attached along with.

I am very interested in the hands-on aspect of this internship, and from what I have known about your institute, I believe that such a position at the xyz institute would provide me with a truly valuable experience and an ideal opportunity to assist at your organization and to expand my research skills.

The course work and the overall exposure at BITS-Pilani have equipped me with good analytical and technical skills attributed to the very high standards of academics of the institute. I now wish to complement this with a research internship in order to acquire the background necessary for a future career in scientific research.
