Dear Dr. xxx

xxx Studentship

I am writing to you to be considered for the above Studentship. As requested, I am enclosing my curriculum vitae. Currently I am doing PhD in Biological Anthropology, and will be starting the third year of my PhD study at xxx College in October 2010. My PhD project investigates the influence of agriculture and sociopolitical development on the human biology of the Holocene Chinese populations, supervised by Dr. xxx.

I have completed my Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with a concentration in Geology from the xxx University. Through the training received at the university, I have developed a general knowledge of anthropology as three of the four main subfields in anthropology, namely, archaeology, biological anthropology, and social anthropology were the core subjects of the course. Leading seminars was one of the course requirements. I very much enjoyed the interaction and intellectual discussions with my coursemates. After graduation, I worked as a research assistant under the supervision of my undergraduate supervisor. Besides the research-related responsibilities, I also helped my supervisor to prepare course materials, in which I took the opportunity to familiarise myself with teaching. In 2006-07, I enrolled at the xxx Centre at the for an MPhil degree. This master’s course provided me with more specific in-depth knowledge in biological anthropology.

In order to broaden and strengthen my knowledge of anthropology, in early 2009 I took the initiative to conduct an independent project concerning the decapitation and vanished headhunting culture in Borneo Island, in which supervised by Dr. xxx. In the meantime, I was occupied by the first-year PhD assessment report. Both works were beautifully done and the independent project was presented in the xxx Conference in in June 2009. Last October, I went to country-region w:st="on" style=""> to begin the first phase of my PhD data collection trip which involved a significant level of research planning and diplomacy. Even though time and financial support were limited, the trip was completed successfully.

I have been involved in a student run charity, [charity name], at the for a year and a half. My responsibilities include visiting housebound and/or elderly people around xxx area and offering companionship and conversation to them. As a volunteer for [charity name], not only have I learnt how to interact with people with different backgrounds and age groups, but also my communication skills have improved.

My educational background and personal experience have prepared me well for the teaching role which the College requires. I hope to be awarded a studentship to help fulfil the teaching needs of the College and to share all my knowledge of anthropology to the undergraduates. The teaching experience gained no doubt in turn would form one of the most important keystones of my future career.

I greatly welcome the opportunity to discuss this letter and my enclosed curriculum vitae and would like to thank you in advance for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

My name
