Hi everyone,
I have just finished to write a cover letter for my PhD application. I wonder if anyone can have a look and give me some suggestions. I am an Italian guy, so probably there will be a lot of mistakes in the letter.
Furthermore, this is my first cover letter, so I'm not completely sure about structure and contents.
I hope that someone will help me with this letter, that would be very helpful for me !
Many thanks,
Federico
Dear MR,
I am writing to express my interest in the PhD position “Horizon 2020 Marie Curie ETN EUROPOL” at XXX University, currently being advertised on XXX.com. I am currently a Master student in the Department of Chemistry at Turin University, and expect to receive my MSc degree in October 2015.
I believe my academic background and experience are well suited for the needs of this project. During my studies at Turin I have gained solid knowledge in Chemical Science, and research experience both through my courses and also during my thesis works in research groups within the University. Differently from the most of the other students, I have started my research experience at Turin University for my Bachelor’s thesis, a computational study of the reaction pathway of graphene’s oxidation, under the supervision of Dr. Ghigo. From this experience I could learn the basics of Computational Chemistry, that I improved in my following studies. Since October 2014 I have worked on my Master’s thesis, which concerns synthesis and characterization of hydrogen storage materials, under the supervision of Prof. Gobetto. Worked in two different research areas, computational and experimental, has given me good experience in both fields, and has increased my skills to a research career. During my studies, I have always engaged myself to do the best. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree with honours, and I got high marks in my MSc. In this way I won two scholarships for academic merit, that allowed me to undertake a research period abroad. I am currency working at the Department of Metallurgy and Materials in the University of Birmingham, in order to finish my Master thesis.
I attended my first NMR university course at the beginning of 2014 and, since that moment, I'm developing an high interest in this instrument. In September 2014, I attended a Summer School about solid state NMR at the University of Turin, in order to better understand this technique. I have been able to use the instrument at the beginning of the year for my Master thesis, when I have done some 1H and 11B NMR analysis. I am particularly interested in working with you as it would improve my skills and my knowledge about Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
I think I am a good candidate as a PhD student because I always loved research work, and I see myself as a passionate future researcher. I have capability of working independently, I quickly learn new techniques and ways of working, I have a keen sensitivity to my work, I have a problem-solving behaviour and I would be really motivated in working at your project. Thanks of my experiences I have learned also how to do my best in cooperative working, I always communicate with supervisors, colleagues and technicians, I’m eager to learn from their experiences and to help anyone by sharing my knowledge.
Enclosed, please find my CV for your review. Please do not hesitate to contact me at xxx
