Cover letter for LSE

Hello,
My congratulations for making this site, I wrote this post once already but i was not able to edit my profile so I do it again with my picture and name.

I am applying for a distance course in Economics and management by the University of London (led by the London School of Economics), everything is ready but I am still doubtful about the support letter I need to send with the application. Would you be so kind to send me your thoughts and suggestions about it? I read already the posts on this site about how to write a good cover letter and I found them very useful, I would like to have some pieces of advices on the structure, style, the key points I should underline in the letter. Thank you.

I am writing to support my application for the BSC in Economics and Management.

My ambition is to unite the industrial culture of continental Europe with the most advanced techniques of management only LSE can give. This will not only secure my career it will also make me able to improve the work environment for me and my society.

I am an engineer with 2 years of experience, since the studies I realised the need for broader perspectives. In order to gain the bigger picture I did extra curricular courses in history and economics. During summer holidays I went to Chinese and German universities (Beijing Foreign Studies Universities, Freien Berlin University) to study the local languages, always with the goal of improving my world I joined a political party where I was in charge of organising the meetings.

I have the basic skills, a master’s degree in engineering from the best university in my country with excellent marks in Maths and Statistics.

I am extremely motivated and self disciplined for learning, during the university I did not hesitate to work as a painter and computer repairman to support myself and have a first hand knowledge of the real work, even more, in order to refine my skills I did my last year of study abroad, in France, where I later did my internship too, always I have been able to plan my returns to Italy to pass my exams.

I have made some suggestions.

I am writing to support my application for the BSC in Economics and Management.
My ambition is to unite (? these are not two things that can be united. You imply that England lacks an industrial culture...) the industrial culture of continental Europe with the most advanced techniques of management only LSE can give. This will not only secure my career it will also make me able to improve the work environment (You don't like the cubicles or large open work spaces?) for me and my society.
I am an engineer with 2 (spell out numbers in a formal letter) years of experience, since(completing my?) the studies I realised the need for a broader perspective. In order to gain the bigger picture (picture of what?) I did extra-curricular courses in history and economics. During summer holidays I went to Chinese and German universities (Beijing Foreign Studies Universities, Freien Berlin University) to study the local languages, always with the goal of improving my world . Thank you a lot, I wrote a new version following your advices. Please do not hesitate to tell me your opinion. If I can ask i would be interested not only in corrections but in general opinions about the letter and in advices on how to expressthe key points.

I would like to say that not only I am qualified but that I could use their teachings to really make some radical improvement in my company or make a new one.

I am applying for the distance learning, I cannot affor to lose my job in France now, does anybody know how difficult is to be admitted?

OK, here is my advice. You need to make your motivation letter distinct from the competition. You need to create a composition that emphasizes your skills, talents, desires, and plans that is truthful and standing out from the others. Otherwise, why would they pick you over someone else? A lot of what you are writing here is very general. Anyone would say it. Strive to make an impression about you as a uniquely qualified person. State not only what you did, but its impact and what you learned.

I have been thinking and thinking, still I cannot find a way to express how good I am. Up to now I focused on the idea that my knowledge in engineering could complement a degree in management, and on my strong points (international culture, motivation, self discipline). I would like to say I am the best investement thhey can do. Any idea?

This is my last version, I am not sure whether I should continue improving or just start again from zero.

Hi; You just did it in this short introduction. It just needs a bit of polish:

I am an engineer who has a earned a career by dedication to my education, but I am not fully satisfied. I am ready to invest three years of my life to study a new topic at high level because I would like to go beyond the bounds of a comfortable career and contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Now you need to make a convincing case of the theme "contribute to society," as opposed to "contribute to my employer." Both are admirable goals. But if your vision is to make your company more efficient and competitive, then say that instead of "contribute to society." Perhaps you need to deeply reflect on what your true vision is, and what your arguments and requisites for achieving it are. That would help you to be clear in your own mind and write a powerful cover letter.

Thank you, I read it yesterday, I found it so interesting I sent a copy to a manager I know (a couple of stairways higher than me in the organigram) and he thanked me, now I am reading the answers to the article.

You are not the first one to remind me of my ignorance, actually this is the reason why I want to join the LSe even if with distance learning. May I ask what experience you have that made you so confident ?

I will post the new version of the letter in a few hours, planning to mail it next week.
