Dear Dr. xxx,

I am writing to apply for the Ph.D. research fellowship in xxx at the Centre for xxx at University of xxx.

Throughout my academic education, I became increasingly fascinated by the field of conservation genetics: the possibility to use DNA based approaches is an exciting field of studies that helps to answer a broad range of questions related to nature and wildlife conservation. I completed my M.A. in xxx in March 2018 with full marks and honors, and look forward to the chance to get an insider view of scientific research.

My inquisitiveness, curiosity and eagerness to gain more skills about the management and protection of wildlife, led me to pursue a research-oriented M.A. As I was selected as an Erasmus echange traineeship at the University of xxx, I have completed a research internship, where I collaborated with xxx on a project on the non-invasive genetic monitoring of a wild otter population in xxx. More precisely, I was involved in the data collection, extraction of DNA, genotyping, genetic data analysis and logistic regression modeling. During this project I was required to do a lot of independent lab work and research, which required self-motivation and enterprise. In particular I was able to perform independently my own experiments and to analyze efficiently all data with the aim of monitor the genetic status of the otter population. Furthermore I investigated the effect of environmental and laboratory variables on the amplification success rate, in order to increase the effectiveness of sampling design and, thus, to maximize the DNA amplification success rate. Through this project I sharpened my critical thinking and analytical skills and I understood that doing research is what suits my attitudes and orientations at best: finding answers to complex problems and transfer knowledge to my surroundings.

Several reasons led me to apply for this project. First, research on historical data for the comprehension of evolutionary and human-mediated processes is a captivating field of studies that will lead to determine their effect on modern population structure and dynamic in order to develop management strategies for the conservation of the species, a topic that interest me a lot. Second, the use of aDNA technology will allow me to learn new techniques and acquire more skills that would open up a whole new set of opportunities for alternative careers in the future. Third, the possibility to collaborate with the University of xxx and the xxx will allow me to work in a multicultural environment and to develop high-quality research.

I am certain that, if I had the chance, I will be able to make a meaningful contribution to your research effort.
