Cover letter for a phD

First of all thanks for this forum, i find it very useful.

I am writing a cover letter for a phd position and i would appreciate it if someone could help me to correct it, i am not sure there are no mistakes.

Dear Professor xxxxx,

I am writing to apply for the PhD position for the project of “xxxx” at xxxxx University.

In September 2007, I completed my Master degree in xxxx and in September 2004 I got the Engineer’s degree in xxxx both from the xxxxxx University, Spain.

During my last academic year of my Engineering I became very interested in animal nutrition and I found the way to take part in a thesis in the xxxxx department. It was a real challenge and a very interesting experience which filled me with enthusiasm to do my best. There I gained profound knwoledges about research and working as a part of a big team. I researched the viability of feeding rumiant animals with alternative nutrients such as citrus. For this I evaluated how feeding sheep with different diets including different amounts of citrus affected to the ruminal parameters: xxxxxxxxx. This study was proved to be a good alternative to feed this animals and with the support of my research team I succeed in my presentation which also made me gain good communication skills and in which I obtained a x out of x. My project was successfully published in xxxxx 2004 under the title: “xxxxxxx” and I was very proud of the results our team obtained.

Once I completed my degree, I focused my professional career on the quality control in beverage industries. In my first job I performed control quality of citrus from the entrance to the exit of the process. Here I developed my accuracy and analytical skills since I became aware of how important was to track every step in the production chain as every small mistake in any of them supposed a big loss at the end of the process.

In 2008 I decided to go further in my career and started to work in a bigger beverage company dedicated to produce beer and soft drinks. There I worked again as a part of a team in the quality control department performing control analysis either phisical-chemical and microbiological. I started to have more and more interest in the microbiology area and the techniques we used, such as membrane filtration, pour plate, MPN techniques, etc. Here I enhanced the laboratory equipment management and developed my competency and commitment skills since we had to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously and deliver results under tight deadlines.

I am particularly interested in working for the xxxxx Universtiy in this PhD position because I believe that my academic training, my thesis and my job experience prepared me to be an effective researcher. I would enjoy working for a large organisation contributing to the quality of life and I am also aware that xxxxx University offers a comprehensive state-of-the-art facilities which provides their employees with the opportunity of grow professionally.
