Here is my cover letter for an internship I am applying to with the Michigan House Democratic Caucus. Any edits for grammar or wording would be greatly appreciated!
Dear -----,
I am writing to express my interest in obtaining a summer internship with the House Democratic Caucus. I am currently a senior in high school; I will graduate in May and attend the University of Michigan this fall. I am very passionate about public policy and confident that I would be a great asset to the Democratic Communications Department.
My leadership experience and strong writing ability make me the ideal candidate for an internship position with your office, especially as a field research, office support, or press intern. As the co-founder of my high school's chapter of STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition, I organized charity events and raised over $1000 dollars in donations for refugees in Darfur. I am always eager to work hard for a cause that I believe in. I also coordinated a Darfur lobby meeting with my Congressman and fellow students. As the lead organizer for each of the aforementioned events, I demonstrated my ability to be dependable, efficient, and organized, all while balancing schoolwork and extracurricular activities.
Last fall, I also volunteered at the local Democratic headquarters for Mark Schauer's congressional campaign.
In college, I hope to pursue a double major in economics and public policy. An internship with your office this summer would give me a great start and allow me to explore the public policy field. Enclosed is a copy of my current resume. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at -----. I will follow up this letter with an email next week to see if we could arrange a time to meet. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, -----
**Not sure how to tie in the volunteering with Mark Schauer into the letter (or if I should mention it at all, but he was the MI Senate majority leader last year before he won the election campaign for Congress, and it was a heavily contested seat too. so I don't know, would it be helpful to include this?).
**"I am always eager to work for a cause I believe in." This part sounds like it could be reworded to relate to the internship more...
Anyway, any suggestions or advice on anything in this letter would be great! Thanks in advance!!
