Cover it up

Hi

A singer says: My voice was completely shot, which is why we put so much echo on it (in the song)and one of the band members sang along with me to cover it up.

--- I understand that "cover it up" refers to the echo effect they used in a song, so two people sang to "mute" the echo effect? Am I pretty much correct? Is there a better/easier way to say the same thing?

cheers

I think you might be trying to make it more complicated than it really is. I think the speaker uses "it" here to refer to his vocal problems, or rather, his (bad-sounding) voice. The echo effect is one way they tried to hide it, and the second singer another.

  • I could be wrong - I don't know anything about recording equipment or how to manage an echo effect, but I don't understand how a second voice could act to mute an echo in the first one.
  • Perhaps someone with experience in this field will chime in.

Probably not.
Echo is usually added post production, so if somebody sang along as a remedy, it would have to be an added track.

If you're talking about a live performance, it seems a little strange. But it's certainly possible to add echo live.

I guess your question is, "What

Hi, Del. You're right. Adding a voice to mute an echo would have to be a first. But some of these guys sit around in post production studios for days f-ing around.

Hi guys!

The recording took place in the studio. It was four o'clock in the morning. I think they were recording the last song called "Last Night On Earth" and then Bono said that his voice was completely shot, which is why we put so much echo on it and Edge sang along with me to cover it up.

--- I understand now that they used the echo effect to cover Bono's shot voice and Edge

Makes sense.

It's still a bit ambiguous as to the sequence of events. Eg.,:

(1) They do a final practice run-thru (or maybe a first take), and he realizes it ain't gonna work.
(2) They fool around with the mix, adding more echo, etc., but can't fix it.
(3-a) They do another take with the second voice singing along (at which point Bono's voice may be even more
