"Kenyan runner Geoffrey Mutai wins the New York City Marathon with a course record time. "

In the above sentence, what does "course record time" mean?

I looked it up in several dictionaries, but failed to find it.

It means the fastest time on record for that particular course. 2 miles. However, you can imagine that a marathon course that runs uphill continuously for that distance would be much harder than a flat or downhill course.

It means the fastest time on record for that particular course. A marathon is defined solely by distance - about 26.2 miles. However, you can imagine that a marathon course that runs uphill continuously for that distance would be much harder than a flat or downhill course. So when we're comparing running times, it's most meaningful to compare running times on the same course. Hen
