Course Description

Today, we live in “the era of science” where the importance of science in society and culture has been increasingly expanded. However, despite such importance of science, various problems, such as a blind faith in science or conversely a general criticism or denial to science, an investment and support for science aiming at a short-term results, a mutual indifference and exclusion caused by the division of departments between liberal arts and science, and so on. It is because of recognition of the problematic situation that the importance of the current science culture has been suggested. This course focuses on several topics which are important when we understand the relationship between science and culture in modern society. The topics will be 1) science and humanism, 2) science and law, 3) science and art, 4) science hall[hall of science] and museum, 5) public understanding of science(history of science). Studying science culture is pursuing the nature of scientific knowledge and focusing on history of science, science and society, science policy, science and value, science and ethics, science and education and so on. Such quests will provide an eye for understanding the nature of science and science culture more fundamentally and generally. We can understand the nature of science and science culture more fundamentally and generally through such quests.)



Communication of Science & Technology

Course Description

The overall objective of the course is the fundamental understanding of the speech of science. (This course aims at the fundamental understanding of the speech of science.) In modern society scientific technology influences real life in many ways, people pay close attention to science and its applied field. However it is difficult for people by themselves to know the advance or change in science field. Under these circumstances it is the press that plays an important role. One of the differences between science and other field such as politics, economy, society is the recrudescence. It is also related to predictability. The opinion of one scientist should be supported by the recrudescence or the verification of other scientist. In this way as science differs from other fields, so do the needs[requirements] of the speech of science. We will examine the characteristics of the speech of science and the methods of study of the speech of science. In the latter half, we will inspect the effective communication of knowledge about science and technology, especially new media in the limelight in the 21st century and the characteristics of technology. Lastly after we will study what science news is, who a journalist specializing in science news, and what makes a science journalist differ from a general journalist, we will practice subject selection and composition.
