Couple is/are

"A bored couple is surprised to learn they are both assassins hired ... to kill each other."

That sentence summarizes the plot of a comedy motion picture.

Would you have used "is"?

Yes. Couple is singular.

I could easily have used either. I don't see what comedy has to do with it, but since 'they' follows soon after, 'are;' would be the more consistent choice.

"Couple is" is normal American English. We don't hear any illogic in it, either. It's just the way we put it.
