If you say 'The couple have two children,' you are saying that between the couple they have two kids; that each person has one from another relationship and when added together now the total is two. If, however, you mean to say that they are the parents of two kids -siblings in this case -use the singular. Thanks

Hi,

Both seem fine to me, and I wouldn't draw different meanings.

"Couple has" is correct because in this scenario, couple is a singular noun. Couple is plural if you were to say something like- A couple of people have-

AnonymousCouple has" is correct
So is 'have' as was established more than three years ago.

The problem as I see it is that some group nouns such as couple and family can be replaced with a singular pronoun and some cannot. This family has four cars! No, it only has two cars. That's consistent and it sounds right to me. This couple has two children. No, it only has one. Consistent, but it sounds barbaric. This couple has two children. No, they only have one

You can't say ?Those family/?Those couple, can you? So why are you allowed to use plural verb with them but not plural determiners?

It is a conceptual decision, not a grammatical decision, and it affects S-V concord, not determiner-noun concord.
