Couple

The couple is watching TV.

The couple are watching TV.

I was doing some practice in my TOEIC test book. Sentence 1 is what I heard from the CD, but Sentence 2 is printed in the audio script.

Do they both sound OK? Please advise.

As Specter says, if you think of the couple as a single unit, use 'is'. If you think of the couple as two people, then use 'are'.

When the collective nouns couple and pair refer to people, they are usually treated as plurals: The newly married couple have found a house near good transportation.
