Counting up my pennies

I wonder regarding "counting up my pennies" do it has other meaning than its direct meaning - to count money? Because from one side he says that he ate the best food but then he counted his pennies...

When I was in my 20s, I was eating Top Ramen, counting up my pennies, saving up to go food shopping, but now I'm 85, and somehow, I feel more alive.
