Vocabulary

counterfeit / forged

Are there any differences between forge and counterfeit? Or should they be used in different contexts?

What would you say 'That's a counterfeit picture.' or 'That's a forged picture.'?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I think they are mostly the same, though forged is used most often to describe documents.

Hi,

My understanding is this.

Counterfeit refers to making an illegal copy, eg counterfeit money

Forged refers to, for example, writing a document or painting a picture and pretending it was done by someone else, eg a forged signature.

Sufi saying: "The counterfeit cannot exist without the real."

With a picture (more accurately, a painting), or a signature, the word is forged.
