Counteract

  • The meaning here, it seems to me, is that home preparation is not particularly effective for becoming good at playing fast chess because of the added element of randomness, which (obviously) you can't prepare for.

Not exactly. It means "act against", "act in the opposite direction of". The meaning here, it seems to me, is that home preparation is not particularly effective for becoming good at playing fast chess because of the added element of randomness, which (obviously) you can't prepare for.
