Counter

Might be a stupid question but...

If you're in a kitchen do you then have to say kitchen counter or can you just say counter and it will be understood that you're refering to the kitchen counter? Or is there another word for kitchen counter which is more used?

I think it's not a stupid question. According to the "Cambridge dictionary", use "kitchen" before it. Remember that " kitchen counter" is American", and "work surface and worktop" are British.
