Countable use of the word 'culture'

Hi, Can you tell me how can a person use the word 'culture' countably?

Japanese culture -- no article seems necessary.

Let me try with the word 'history'.

Japanese history -- no article seems necessary.
a media history -- an article seems
necessary

Having said that, the distinction between the examples is hard to make for me. Can you help?
