Countable or uncountable?

Which is correct?

Manga is becoming a famous Japanese industry.

Manga are becoming famous Japanese industries.

I want to know whether the word “manga” is countable or uncountable.

I disagree with the previous answer.

Manga is a category of entertainment. As such, I think that the singular is more appropriate. This is seconded by the fact that when we talk about manga, we are talking about a specific sector of the Japanese entertainment industry. We wouldn't say manga are industries. Manga is one category of industry coming from Japan.

The dictionaries say manga is both countable and uncountable in English so I would agree with 'Manga [the genre, the concept] is more and more popular', and stand corrected by the previous writer as that fits the original sentence best. However, I do think 'Manga are fun to read' is correct [= the countable comic books].

I think it's a new loanword whose grammar is yet to be fully established. However, to those who know what manga is, it is obvious that it is a category word, like butter or beer. And just like you wouldn't say "beer are good" you woldn't say "manga are fun". You need to specify the units: beer bottles, manga books. Or, just say "beer is good" or "manga is fun".
