Count and uncountable nouns??

Why does the writer use 'are' in (a) for a lot of books? It should read "There is a lot of books.."

a)There are a lot of books in your bag.
b)There are lots of books in you bag.

c)There is a lot of milk left in your cup.

d)There are lots of milk left in your cup.

There is of no importance in the choice of the verb. Books is plural, so are must be used. Milk is singular, so is must be used.
